An alpine gem
In 1907, after a remarkable journey from Austria to the Southern Alps, the first chamois were released in the Tasman Valley. Hardy and surefooted, they quickly adapted to their new environment and spread across the high country.
With a heritage stretching back to Europe’s Ice Age hunters and noble estates, the chamois carries a legacy of myth, tradition, and sporting prestige that endures in New Zealand today.

European chamois are among the most alert and unpredictable animals a hunter can face. Guards keep watch for the slightest movement, and at the first sign of danger ,the herd bolts across cliffs and scree.
They can be hunted year-round, with the rut in May, June, and early July when males carry a striking long black coat.
